The strawberries that
grew out front
were sweeter than
any store bought
candy, and sip of
champagne,
all the kisses
from my lover.
The strawberries out
front decorated our
homelessness
with hope and love,
it felt like we had more
money, more wealth
with the ripe fruit in the
front of your house.
Walking from the trailer
was a desolate and arid
trudge, but the strawberries
in front made it worthwhile.
The strawberries out front
were your promise to me:
Life will be okay.
Now that you’re gone
though
and the strawberries died
from neglect
and a very dry year,
I am not so sure.
